Last week was an exciting time for Borderlands fans, as the Borderlands 3 release date and much more was revealed. With the release date reveal of 13 September came one thing that didn’t sit well with PC gamers. Borderlands 3 will be an Epic Games Store timed-exclusive and those who prefer Steam was not happy. Borderlands 3 would only release in April 2020 on Steam. As has become tradition, unhappy gamers took to Steam for some Borderlands review bombing.
In mid-March this year, Valve did add a new feature that would see off-topic reviews removed from a gamer’s score. Now, Valve has implemented this feature on the Borderlands titles on Steam, effectively curbing Borderlands review bombing. A statement sent to Ars Technica by Valve’s Doug Lombardi, explains the Steam feature and that it has been enabled on all Borderlands titles on Steam.
After a review of current review activity on Borderlands titles, the decision was made to tag the franchise for off-topic reviews on Steam, effective immediately. As a result, user reviews submitted while the titles are tagged will not count towards the games’ Review Scores. User reviews written during the tagged period will still be accessible and users can choose to include these reviews in the Review Score by changing their preferences.
This should help gamers who don’t care about anything but the quality of the actual game decide if it is worth their money and the original Borderlands, as well as Borderlands 2, definitely is. Keep in mind that those off-topic reviews won’t be removed from the game’s page. Valve isn’t censoring you if you decide to partake in review bombing so you can still voice your opinion about Borderlands 3’s Epic Games Store exclusivity. You can view those off-topic reviews but the reviews just won’t factor into the overall score.
