Overwatch 2 is looking fantastic but feels more like an expansion right now more than anything else. A new PvE mode, some hero changes and new maps but nothing huge to make it feel like a sequel. Well, that was the whole point of it according to Jeff Kaplan. The way Overwatch 2 is going to work is that it will contain the new story mode but all heroes, maps and modes will be playable from the original game too. In short, everything you have now and can play will be in the second game.
But the end-game plan at Blizzard is to merge the two games into one over time. Jeff Kaplan shared his vision for this with Kotaku saying he plans to bring them together as one so both Overwatch 1 and Overwatch 2 feel the same.
The plan to merge the two games could arise especially to help protect the Overwatch League which could be greatly affected by the sequel’s launch. Kaplan says his top priority is to ensure that players don’t end up feeling abandoned as the sequel arrives and Overwatch evolves.
Blizzard says Overwatch 2 is still a while away with no release date or window in sight. We will update you as we learn more.
