Online Gaming in China Now Severely Limited for Minors

Online gaming in China

Sometimes you can get lost in a game world for hours, maybe even days on end. You might be able to do that still now, play when you want and spend some money on a game if you want to. However, people under the age of 18 in China will not be able to. Online gaming in China has been severely nerfed for minors thanks to new regulations by the Chinese government.

As reported by CNN, the Chinese government has a new set of guidelines for all online gaming platforms in the country to follow, even Tencent. First up, a curfew has been set on online gaming in China for minors, so gamers under the age of 18 can’t enjoy some online gaming in China from 22:00 to 08:00.

That doesn’t sound too bad right, as they need to get rest and get ready to go to school anyway? Well, here’s the kicker: Online gaming in China for minors are also limited to 90 minutes on weekdays and three hours each day over the weekend. That’s not a lot of time at all if you play games like Dota 2 or an MMO.

A spokesperson reportedly said that this is to create a “clear internet space” and “protecting the physical and mental health of minors.” Further explaining that:

(This notice) has emphasized on the responsibility of the corporations, and has executed the government’s duty to supervise the problem

That’s not all…

Players up to the age of 16 can’t spend more than 200 Yuan (R422) while players between the age of 16 and 18 can’t spend more than 400 Yuan (R844) on online gaming in a month.
