Don’t Expect a Joker Sequel as the Director Clears up Confusion

Joker sequel movie Joaquin Phoenix Todd Phillips Warner Bros

Judging by the early reviews of the upcoming Joker movie (releases 4 October in South Africa) starring Joaquin Phoenix as the iconic villain, it might just be one of, if not the best movie of 2019. However, sometimes it doesn’t matter how well a film is received or how well it sells, as it might have always been planned as a once-off, solo movie by Warner Bros.

Recently, some rumours have started floating around that a Joker sequel is already being planned. Basically, what happened was that director Todd Phillips said in an interview that he would do anything Joaquin Phoenix wants. In another interview, the director said he was speaking “jokingly” when mentioning him and Joaquin Phoenix would be able to come up with “something pretty cool” for Joker 2.

Now, Todd Phillips has spoken out to clear up the rumours about a Joker sequel. Speaking to GameSpot, the director said that:

We have no plan for a sequel. We made this movie, I pitched it to Warner Bros. as one movie, it exists in its own world, that’s it. It’s not about worldbuilding, it’s not about other versions, it’s like, here’s our version of the origin story, that’s it. That’s what I meant.

Further, Todd Phillips cleared up rumours that the Joker movie could tie into the upcoming The Batman, explaining that Joker doesn’t tie into anything:

I don’t see [Joker] connecting to anything in the future. This is just a movie.

It is probably a bit too early to talk about future projects anyway and it is very clear that the Joker movie doesn’t tie into the DC extended film/series universe at all right now.
