Blitzchung on Blizzard’s Response Over Hong-Kong Controversy and Ban

Blizzard Hearthstone Blitzchung Hong Kong

Chung “Blitzchung” Ng Wai, in case you didn’t know, is the Grandmaster Hearthstone player who was banned for voicing his political opinion on the Hong Kong riots during a Hearthstone Grandmasters tournament stream, which led to a #BoycottBlizzard movement and even Blizzard employees walking out and more. It has been a rough time for the developer and yesterday, the president of Blizzard, J. Allen Brack gave a lengthy response.

It has been interesting to see all the reactions from gamers, the whole #BoycottBlizzard thing and how many reacted to Blizzard’s response where they lowered the ban to six months and decided to give Blitzchung his prize money. The response from Blitzchung sounds mostly positive.

Well, Blitzchung has responded to Blizzard’s statements and new decision via a post on TwitLonger. Starting off, he thanks fans and reiterates that he knew he might get a penalty for his actions. Remember, the fact remains that he did break tournament rules.

First of all, I’m grateful for Blizzard reconsidering their position about my ban. Earlier this week, I told the media that I knew I might have penalty or consequence for my act because I understand that my act could take the conversation away from the purpose of the event. In the future, I will be more careful on that and express my opinions or show my support to Hong Kong on my personal platforms.

Blitzchung then goes on to respond to the prize and ban time decisions by Blizzard, first explaining what he thinks about the new decision on prize money.

For tournament prizing, I quoted what Blizzard said on the official website, they mention that I played fair in the tournament and they believe I should receive my prizing. This is the part I really appreciate, Blizzard also said they understand for some this is not about the prize, but perhaps for others, it is disrespectful to even discuss it. People from Blizzard had explained this to me through a phone call and I really appreciate that and I accept their decision on this part.

Blitzchung then goes on to discuss his suspension of six months and it looks like he agrees with Blizzard but he wishes that the developer would reconsider the penalty against the two casters.

Blizzard had changed their suspension on me from a year to six months. Once again, I appreciate for their reconsideration on this. To be honest, I think six months is still quite a lot to me. But I also being told that I can continue to compete in the hearthstone pro circuit which they mean the grandmaster tournament. I appreciate this decision they made because grandmaster is currently the highest level tournament in competitive Hearthstone. However, I wish Blizzard can reconsider about their penalty on the two casters involved.

Then, Blitzchung explains that he hasn’t decided if you will be staying in competitive Hearthstone or not and that he will take this time to relax. Lastly, he finishes off his response with the following:

Hearthstone changed the way I live, I really love this community. Blessing to all the players out there, and blessing to Blizzard.

All in all, it looks like Blitzchung is relatively happy with the new decision from Blizzard and it is clear that he loves the game that Blizzard has been created. It doesn’t look like he will be deleting his Battle.net account or boycotting the developer or the game, which might be something to think about…
